Your Journey to Cloud Platform

Moving computing workloads to the cloud can realize compelling economic benefits, but the mechanics of data and workload migration can strain limited IT resources. Google has identified partners to help you analyze your existing infrastructure, map out dependencies, and find an economical path that meets your requirements. Our partners can also manage your migration in a secure, cost-efficient manner. Or, you can learn more about migrating your machine images to Google Compute Engine on your own.

GETTING STARTED WITH VM MIGRATION

Many companies start their journey to the cloud by shifting some work from on-premises resources.

Cloud Disaster Recovery

In conjunction with our partners, we have developed tools to continuously replicate your applications to the cloud, providing a robust disaster recovery solution. Leave your expensive secondary data centers behind and rely on the cloud to achieve robust disaster recovery. With Recovery Points Objectives that help you restore from a recent state and Recovery Time Objectives that guarantee you’ll get back up and running quickly, you can rest assured that your workloads are resilient.

Test in Production Environments

Replicating your production environment for staging and testing creates unnecessary costs and operational overhead. The economics of cloud computing allow your development teams to work with the resources they need when they need them. Google and its partners have purpose-built solutions for creating dev/test versions of your production environment without the need for large capital expenditures.

Lift and Shift Workloads

Often it makes sense to move an entire workload to the public cloud. Leveraging the cloud can allow you to escape capital intensive refresh cycles. Google has created solutions with its partners that facilitate this type of move. Using our partner’s on-premises discovery and analysis tools will help you understand the cost benefit of moving to the cloud. Our partners’ leading replication technology moves your data and workloads with minimal time and expense.

SELF SERVICE OR PARTNER ASSISTED?

Broadly speaking, there are two approaches to cloud migration: self-service and partner-assisted. Our experience suggests that many of our customers, from small businesses to large enterprises, ultimately find a partnership approach provides a better experience and consumes less time and money.

Migration Phase Assessment Planning Network Configuration Replication
Self Service Internal teams generate maps of application dependencies and network traffic. Internal teams download cost models from public cloud vendors and create complex spreadsheets modelling the cost. Teams estimate the best virtual resources to use. Teams configure network rules to match their internal systems. Teams package up machine images using command line tools. Premium OS licenses are mapped (when possible) and packed with the images.
Partner Assisted Partners deploy agents on the network to map server and network activity. Application clusters are automatically extracted. Partners determine the appropriate machine types to handle existing workloads across multiple public cloud vendors. Partner solutions enable networking to match the existing topology. Partners replicate the virtual machines into the cloud, accounting for licensing transitions.

RECOMMENDED VM MIGRATION PARTNERS

These partners have been hand-picked by Google to provide the best customer experience throughout the migration process. They allow you to migrate at your own pace, while utilizing their technology to avoid common pitfalls inherent to migrations. These partners cover the entire migration challenge: from on-premises infrastructure assessment and cost modeling to actual data replication to the cloud.

Planning

These partners can complete an assessment of your current infrastructure and cost modeling of your journey to the cloud.

With the Cloudamize analytics platform, organizations can assess, plan, and manage their entire cloud lifecycle while maintaining enterprise-level control and visibility.

RISC Networks’ platform provides customers with an application centric view of their IT environment. Automated application discovery and grouping enables customers to evaluate complex application architectures within data centers and cloud environments, and plan migrations to public and private clouds.

SELF-SERVICE MIGRATION RESOURCES

If you’d prefer to move your virtual machines to Cloud Platform on your own, you can create machine images of your workloads and migrate them to Compute Engine. Currently, support for this approach has some limitations that are important to consider: the machine image must be under 100GB and cannot use certain premium operating systems (notably Microsoft Windows). For those looking to understand general concepts about moving to Cloud Platform, we also offer resources on best practices and mapping AWS concepts to Cloud Platform.
